How Long Does it Take To Learn Bookbinding?

It's a question we get asked a lot in the shop, in workshop bookings, in the comments under an instagram post: how long does this take to learn? (and close second: Is it hard to learn?)

The short version is that it depends what you want to make. The longer version is fairly reassuring, so here it is.

Your First Book

You can make a simple bound book in a single day. That's not a sales line, it's just the truth.  It's what happens in our in-person full day workshops, and it's what our online course the Beginner's Bookbinding Blueprint is built around. Folding signatures, sewing a simple book block, understanding how to strengthen and round the spine: none of that requires months of practice. There's a real learning curve in the first few hours, but it's not a steep one. Most people leave that first session with a book they made themselves and a fair bit of surprise that they pulled it off.

Getting Confident

Where the real skill starts to show up is in the weeks after that first book. A few weeks of regular practice is usually what it takes to build the muscle memory. Cover corners that are cut at just the right angle (and not too close!), sewing that doesn't pull a lot tighter at one end, an evenly rounded spine. This is the unglamorous part, and it's also the part that makes everything after it easier.

Taking on more Complex Projects

A well-constructed hardcover book with a leather spine is a different undertaking. That can take months of regular practice to do well, not because any single step is hard, but because there are a lot of steps, and each one needs to be right before the next one goes on top of it. We don't say this to put anyone off. It's genuinely the appeal. A craft that rewards a many hours differently to a first hour is a craft worth sticking with. And from here you can open a whole world of areas to pursue and perfect, tooling, gold leaf, inlays and onlays, different sewing techniques. The list is virtually endless. I am yet to meet another bookbinder who is not planning the next 'thing' to explore. 

Where to Start

None of this is a reason to wait. The point was never to rush to the "finished" version of a bookbinder. The point is to start, and to let the skill build the way it always does, by creating one book at a time.
