Inside the Bindery: What to Expect at our Workshops
One question we get often is: What’s actually involved in your bookbinding workshops?
So, with three new dates just released (you can now book your place here), we thought we’d give you a closer look., especially if you’ve been meaning to join but weren’t sure what to expect.
A full day of hands-on learning — with everything provided
Our Beginner’s Bookbinding Workshop runs from 9.30am to around 3.30pm in our upstairs bindery, right in the heart of Bendigo’s Arts Precinct. Small groups (no more than five people) keep things relaxed and welcoming, with plenty of time for one-on-one guidance.
You’ll learn to make a section-sewn, hard cover book from start to finish using traditional materials, tools of the trade, and time-honoured techniques. Everything you need is included in the price: your materials, a curated take-home kit, and the tools you'll use throughout the day.
Who it’s for (and who usually comes)
We’ve had artists, teachers, retirees, writers, design students, and curious creatives of all kinds join our workshops. There is no previous experience required. Most people come on their own, but it’s also a lovely day to share with a friend or family member.
If you enjoy working with your hands, learning old skills, or making something that will last, this might be just your kind of day.
Simon’s teaching style (and what people say after)
Workshops are led by Simon upstairs in the bindery where he spends most of his time restoring old books, binding custom journals, and crafting heirloom boxes. He’s been doing this work for over 20 years, but he teaches in a friendly, down-to-earth way that makes everyone feel at ease.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about slowing down, enjoying the process, and learning something new. Many people leave saying it’s the most peaceful and rewarding thing they’ve done in years.
