If you've ever found yourself wondering how books are made — or felt that quiet pull to try something with your hands — bookbinding might be for you.
Lately there’s been a real return to what some folks are calling “grandma hobbies” — things like knitting, mending, baking, calligraphy. It makes sense. When life moves fast, slow and steady work becomes more than just a pastime — it’s a way to take a breath. Bookbinding fits right in. It's calm, tactile, and deeply satisfying.
The good news? You don’t need expensive tools or formal training to get started. Just a bit of time, some paper, and the willingness to try.
A Few Good First Steps
You don’t have to do it all at once. Here’s what I’d recommend if you’re just starting out:
1. Learn one simple stitch.
The pamphlet stitch is where I often point beginners — it’s easy to learn and surprisingly versatile.
2. Get a few basic tools.
You’ll want good scissors, a needle, some thread, and a bone folder. Nothing fancy — just the essentials. We’ve got a free guide that walks you through the essential tools and substitutes you need to get started.
3. Use what you’ve got.
Scrap paper, cereal boxes for spine pieces, old thread — it doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, it’s better if it’s not. That’s how you learn.
4. Try a kit or short class.
If you like structure, our Beginner's Bookbinding Kit or a workshop can give you confidence and direction.
You’re Not Alone
When I first started binding books over 20 years ago, I made a lot of mistakes. That’s part of it. But I also found people who were generous with their knowledge — and that made all the difference.
One of the things we love to do is to pass the knowledge on. Here’s how we can help:
